Is Sun and Ultra Sun worth playing?
There’s no reason to specially get Sun as Ultra Sun is out, and you should get both only if you’re a hardcore Pokémon gamer. It isn’t much worth it spending around $40 on each game to play for largely the same experience.
Should I play the sun before Ultra Sun?
It is not a sequel like Black 2 and White 2 were to Black and White, so it can be fully enjoyed without having any knowledge of Sun and Moon. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that since Sun and Moon have a very unfinished feeling to them, it is probably better to not play them before Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

The Ultra versions are worth playing. The vanilla versions should just be skipped over. The main benefit of the vanilla version is the story of a couple of the npc’s but its not worth sacrificing all the gameplay additions of Ultra to get when you can just google it instead.
